A YOUNG man suffered head injuries after being attacked in Crook market place over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Police say a group of youths, thought to be aged between 14 and 18, were walking towards the town centre on a footpath that runs alongside the new supermarket building site, when an altercation occurred between two males.

At some point, one male struck another male with an unknown object, causing head injuries to the victim.

Two older men are known to have offered assistance to the injured male, although no ambulance was called at the time.

Durham, Police are investigating the incident, which occurred at about 6.30pm on Sunday, May 1.

PC John Foster, from Bishop Auckland CID, assured people living in the area that the incident is thought to be a one-off.

He said: “This was a busy bank holiday weekend with people enjoying Crookfest, although this incident has nothing to do with the music event.

“My appeal is for anyone who knows anything to come forward, did you see the incident?

“Do you know who was involved or do you know who the older males were who offered assistance? “Can I also take this opportunity to reassure people that violent crime is thankfully rare and this incident is not believed to have been a random attack.”

Officers are keen to speak to the two older men who offered assistance to the injured male.

Any witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident, should call Durham Police’s non-emergency line on 101, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555-111.
