A BOMB squad Carried out three controlled explosions on unwanted ammunition at a North-East police headquarters earlier on Friday.

People in Durham City could hear the loud ‘bangs’ as the Army Ordnance Disposal carried out the operation at Aykley Heads.

Durham Constabulary has released video footage of one of the explosions filmed from the new HQ window.

A spokesman for the force said: “Along with colleagues from the Army Ordnance Disposal we have carried out several controlled explosions near to Police HQ.

“The explosions were to destroy unwanted ammunition, obviously this is an unusual event, but there is no reason to be alarmed and we apologise for any disruption.”

The explosions were carried out between 11.30am and 12.15pm.
