THE A1 will close this weekend between Leeming and Scotch Corner for a new drain to be fitted.

The closure will take place between 8pm on Saturday and 6am on Monday.

A spokesman for Highways England said the closure was necessary to install a new drain which will cross both lanes of the carriageway.

He added: "We’ll be carrying out the work overnight and during the day on Sunday but clearly signed diversions will be in place.

"We suggest allowing an extra 30 minutes for all journeys."

Diversions will be in place and it is anticipated the closure will cause congestion on other roads in the area, with previous closures causing problems in Northalleron, Richmond, Catterick and Croft-on-Tees.

The work is part of improvements to the A1 which will see the route upgraded to motorway standard between Leeming and Scotch Corner.
