FLYING high after seeing their team win promotion to the Premier Division of the Evo-Stik League, Spennymoor Town fans pulled on their own football boots.

A day after celebrating the Moors' promotion, following a 2-0 win over Northwich Victoria on Saturday (April 30), Spennymoor Town FC Supporters Club played in an annual charity match at The Brewery Field.

Money raised at the event will be donated to the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust, which is based in the town and helps families affected by cancer.

Trust founder Mark Solan managed the Team Solan Home side, even playing briefly despite being in training for a charity boxing match against former Sunderland player Julio Arca, and right-hand man Allan Wheatley managed the Team Solan Away side.

Mr Solan said: "It's good fun, a nice community event and all good for the trust, we appreciate it."

Organisers Daniel Newell and Chris Lownds thanked everyone who took part and around 100 spectators who cheered them on.

The event raised about £1,000 which Spennymoor Town chairman Brad Groves has offered to match.

Mr Newell said: "It is always a good occasion, it was a real success, everyone enjoyed it, we've supported a good cause and the bar was chocka so its put some money into the club too."
