JACKIE McNAMARA has signalled an intention to ‘prove people wrong’ after sections of York City fans called for him to be sacked.

The Minstermen, already relegated, dropped to the foot of League Two after losing 4-1 to promotion chasing Bristol Rovers at Bootham Crescent.

It was a heavy defeat which led to York fans chanting ‘Jackie out’ and ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at the players.

Striker Bradley Fewster, on loan from Middlesbrough, had to be escorted off the pitch when an angry fan who invaded the pitch confronted him and Luke Hendrie.

McNamara said: “I understand the frustration, but there’s nobody more frustrated than me. I feel my hands are tied a little bit, because I’m waiting for the season to finish, so we can change and freshen things up.

“Since coming here, I’ve tried to improve things and get over the line, so we could change things that needed changing in the summer.

“It would be a sore one for myself, therefore, if there was to be a change and somebody else was brought in after what we’ve been through.

“I want to instil my own things, show what I’ve done in my career and get the backing to prove people wrong by making changes for the good of the club and, hopefully, that’s what I will be judged on.”

Billy Bodin netted either side of half-time to put Rovers in control. Former Hartlepool striker Jermain Easter and Lee Mansell added two more before the end, although Kenny McEvoy grabbed a consolation for York.

York: Flinders; Winfield, Bennett, Cameron, Berrett, Penn (Carson 57), Summerfield, Alessandra, Fewster, Galbraith (MvEvoy 57). Subs (not used): Riordan, Swan, Thompson, Dixon, Ingham.

GATESHEAD brought the curtain down on a frustrating season in the Conference by losing 4-2 to Chester.

The Heed actually took the lead when substitute Rob Ramshaw found the net five minutes after half-time.

But Chester hit back in style by scoring four goals inside 20 minutes to seal the points.

Kane Richards struck the equaliser on the hour and two minutes later John Higgins put Chester ahead and worse was to come for the visitors.

Top scorer Ross Hannah grabbed his first in the 76th minute before adding a second four minutes later to expose Gateshead’s defensive weaknesses once more.

There was a late tap-in from Danny Johnson to reduce the deficit to two but the damage had already been done. Gateshead have plenty work to do ahead of next season if they want to become promotion contenders.

Gateshead: Russell, Baxter, Clark (Curtis, 6), Whitmore, Holden, Gillies, Mafuta (Chandler, 36), Pattison, Hamilton, Bowman (Ramshaw, 36), Johnson. Subs (not used): Macdonald, Onovwigun.
