A MARKET town will step back in time this summer as it hosts its first 1940s weekend.

Barnard Castle Town Council is organising the event, which is funded by local businesses, on June 25 and 26 June.

Several military vehicles will be displayed on the market place cobbles including Ford Jeeps, Austin Ambulance K2, Willys Jeeps, Dodge WC7 Command Vehicle, Bedford MWD.

Re-enactment and living history groups are also confirmed for both days while vintage stalls will be in Woodleigh as well as Methodist Church Hall, on the Saturday.

Lancashire Belle will be performing all day Saturday on the performance space outside Woodleigh as well as at the 1940s dance on Saturday evening at St. Mary’s Church.

Meanwhile the Teesdale Lions will be running a children’s fairground in Woodleigh grounds with old fashioned fete type games and there will also be a street collection for Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The event has also been advertised by the town’s mayor, Sandra Moorhouse and her consort, Ian Moorhouse, who invited dignitaries from across the region to join them on a Treasures of Teesdale trip, in a vintage coach, called Harriet, on Tuesday, April 26.

Cllr Moorhouse said: “The coach trip on Harriet was great fun, showing off the Teesdale area, uphill and down dale through farmyards and over very, very tight bridges, we went to places that even local people hadn't been to before.

“It really was a wonderful classic coach ride with coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, thrown in.”
