A NATIONAL cats’ protection charity taught children in Ferryhill and Chilton lessons in feline care during visits to their schools.

Pupils learned about looking after cats, responsible pet ownership, understanding feline body language, cats diet, and the work of Cats Protection when charity representative, Caroline Burden, visited Ferryhill Station, Broom Cottages, Dean Bank and Cleves Cross Primary Schools, in Ferryhill, and Chilton Primary School.

Miss Burden, community education officer, said: “We want to get into more schools and more community groups to promote those messages.

“It has gone really well, there have been some really positive responses from the schools.

“The children have really enjoyed it.”

Edward Jackson, headteacher at Ferryhill Station Primary School, said: “It provides the opportunity for another visitor to come into the school and for the children to have a theme to base their writing and learning around.

“It inspires children and makes them more enthusiastic, which makes them perform better.”

Glenys Newby, from Approach Too, who organised the visit, added: “If we can teach children about responsible pet ownership then that impacts on the community by making it a cleaner and safer place for people to live in.”
