THE landlord of a pub which has welcomed the likes of Tony Blair and George Bush is celebrating 40 years at the helm.

Geoff Rayner took over the Dun Cow Inn, in Sedgefield, in 1976, and raised a toast to his prolonged success over a pint with local MP Phil Wilson.

“I love my job, and couldn’t imagine doing anything else," said the 63-year-old, who is still actively involved in the day-to-day running of the business. "It’s been a privilege to serve at the pub for so long, and I’ve been very lucky with the locals – they’re all fantastic."

During his time at the Enterprise Inns pub, in Front Street, he has served some very well-known customers – notably the then US President George Bush and Tony Blair during a state visit in 2003.

"I’ve had lots of memorable moments at the Dun Cow Inn over the years – serving the local community and world leaders alike," he added. "I treat everyone with the same hospitality, whether they’re a president, local or traveller dropping in – everyone’s welcome.”

In recognition of his 40 years' service, Mr Rayner was presented with a bottle of champagne and bouquet of flowers by Ian Ronayne, managing for the north sector, of Enterprise, at a trade show in Leeds.

Enterprise CEO Simon Townsend, in a personal message to Mr Rayner, said: “It is a huge achievement to maintain your motivation, passion, energy and commitment in order to be successful over such a long period of time, and you must be hugely proud of what you have achieved over the years.”
