A PRIMARY school has swept the board at a countywide sports day.

St Margaret’s CofE Primary School, in Durham City, came out on top in all three competitions staged – indoor athletics, swimming and netball.

Steven Barella, the school’s head of sport, said: “We were delighted to have even qualified for the three finals but knew we had our work cut out to be successful as so many pupils were involved across all the teams.

“I can only put the success down to the enthusiasm, enjoyment, determination and desire of the pupils, parents and staff at the school.

“I’m sure the love of sport which they all have will lead to healthy lives – and maybe a few Olympic champions.

“We have a clear vision to help pupils access local and life-long sport and are lucky to have supportive parents, who keenly foster this interest.”

All three events were held on the same day – the swimming at Freeman’s Quay in Durham, the athletics at Spennymoor leisure centre and the netball at Maiden Castle, near Durham.

Recently, the school’s years five and six boys’ team won a district-wide cross country running competition in Chester-le-Street, with the girls finishing as runners-up.
