THE boss of the Tyne and Wear Metro and the man in overall charge of transport for the North-East Combined Authority is to be put on the spot by members of campaign group Railfuture.

Tobyn Hughes, who is the director general of Nexus – which owns and manages the Metro – will speak to the group at its general meeting in Newcastle.

He is expected to talk about current challenges, as well as describe plans to replace the Metro train fleet.

Last month, Nick Forbes, the leader of Newcastle City Council, criticised repeated poor performance on the network and suggested the operator, German firm Deutsche Bahn, could be stripped early of its contract.

Damian Bell, a spokesman for Railfuture, said: “Tobyn Hughes has a very wide remit and the future shape of public transport across the North-East will depend a lot on the decisions he has to make through the coming months.

“Our members will have lots to ask him.”

The meeting at 2pm on Saturday (March 12) is at Newcastle Arts Centre on 67 Westgate Road, Newcastle. Non-members are welcome and admission is free.
