CHILDREN as young as seven have been learning self-defence techniques from a martial arts expert.

Karate black belt Darren Cutler has been taking classes at Shotley Bridge Primary School, near Consett in County Durham.

Mr Cutler, a prison officer and personal trainer from Blackhill, approached the school and offered his services because his daughter, Mellya, eight, is a pupil there.

He said: “I am teaching them how to stay safe and situational awareness to be aware of anything that is going on and how to remove themselves from situations.

“It is conflict management rather than just techniques. They also learn a self defence system that backs that up like striking, kicking, escapes and breakaways.”

Mr Cutler is a qualified instructor and the 11 week course has 20 children aged seven to 11 taking part on Thursdays after school.

Headteacher Martin Bell said: “They love it. They are incredibly enthusiastic and work incredibly hard.

“By the end of the session they are exhausted, but it is building their self-esteem.

“They are very respectful during it and they are learning new skills and socialising together. It is really good, safe, fun and educational.”
