ONE of the main routes through North Yorkshire was closed on Sunday afternoon after a crash involving five vehicles.

An elderly man was seriously injured in the incident, which happened shortly before 2.30pm on the A64 near Rillington.

Fire and rescue crews from Malton and Sherburn together with the police were quickly on the scene and the road was closed in both directions between the B1249 and the B1248 near Norton-on-Derwent.

The accident involved a Mini, an Audi, a Citroen Berlingo, a Ford Focus and a Ford Mondeo.

All other occupants of vehicles were out before the firefighters arrived and were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel.
