MOTORISTS have been praised for helping round-up two horses who escaped a field and ran amok on a busy main road.

The incident happened around lunchtime today on the A168 in North Yorkshire, near to the A19.

It is believed that car drivers and a lorry driver helped in the operation prior to the emergency services being notified.

The Northern Echo:

The lorry which helped corral the horses.

One witness told The Northern Echo: "Two horses escaped from a nearby farm and run wild on the A168 Southbound.

"Thanks to the help of drivers the horses were taken into a field on the side of the motorway and appropriate services were called."

Fellow motorist, Sharon Caddell, from Middlesbrough had special praise for the lorry driver.

"We saw cars slowing and then noticed them," she said. "They were less than 100 feet heading towards our car.

"Some cars bypassed them, but most kind of acted in unison and slowed and moved close together to corral them.

"The hero lorry driver turned to partially block the roads and them. Then a fella and myself and couple of others got out to help them get to safety in adjoining field.

"Traffic remained stopped till we got back into cars and we could move off safely. I think the police incident van noted it as motorway signs flashed shortly thereafter."
