A MAN mistook a white van for his own and prised it open with a wooden bar in a "moment of genuine stupidity", a court heard.

Liam Joseph Blakey, of Howlish View, Coundon, near Bishop Auckland, pleaded guilty to the criminal damage caused to the van in Crook.

The 33-year-old, who had been drinking for two days, broke into the car in the belief he had left his keys inside.

He was found by officers sat inside it on December 26.

Newton Aycliffe Magistrates yesterday (January 21) gave him a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £100 compensation to the victim.
