MEMBERS of a primary school boxing club were “buzzing” following a visit from a professional boxer.
Children from West Cornforth Primary School, County Durham, had a visit from unbeaten professional boxer Josh Leather, from Guisborough, to celebrate the newly founded club.
The children had the chance to show him the skills they have been learning over the last five weeks, pick up some tips and get his autograph.
The club is run by iFit Kids, a Spennymoor-based company which works with primary schools to promote healthy lifestyles.
Kieran Cain, who runs iFit Kids, also owns Spennymoor Sports, which sponsors Mr Leather.
He said: “It gives the kids a bit of inspiration and gives them an idea of what it takes to reach the top. We’ve been showing them how to box and other things to do with healthy eating and keeping active to show what it takes to be a boxer.”
Gareth Hamblin, sports coordinator at West Cornforth Primary School, decided to launch the club after pupils said it was something they would like to try.
He said: “The club has been very successful so we’re hoping to continue with it.
“The kids loved meeting Josh. It’s not every day you get a professional athlete to come along so there’s been a bit of a buzz about the school.”
