WEATHER warnings have been issued for the North-East and North Yorkshire, after high winds and heavy rain were forecast for over the weekend.

Highways England said road users in the North-East and North-West should take extra care on Sunday due to high winds and published a severe weather alert for high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes.

A spokesperson said: “Highways England is working closely with the Met Office to monitor weather conditions and maintain safe roads and reliable journeys.

“Drivers are advised to plan for their journey before they set out, checking the forecast and road conditions and to leave extra time if travel conditions are poor, and to delay their journey if the weather becomes severe.”

The Met Office has yellow “be aware” warnings in place for high winds in the North-East and North Yorkshire on Saturday and Sunday, while heavy rain is also forecast for parts of North Yorkshire on Sunday.

“Although rainfall accumulations are not expected to be very large rivers remain high from previous rainfall and are expected to respond introducing a risk of minor river flooding,” said the Met Office.

“Although the rain will ease during the early afternoon it is expected that there will be a continued risk of minor river flooding until evening.

“Please be aware of the risk of some disruption due to river flooding.”

The latest warnings come just a week after gales caused major damage on the North-East coast, overturning static caravans and blowing roofs off some buildings.
