DURHAM Cathedral has launched a funding appeal for its music.

Almost £400,000 a year is spent on music at the Cathedral, including on services and concerts.

James Lancelot, the Cathedral’s master of the choristers and organist, said: “Music is an integral part of Cathedral life and boys have been singing here as choristers since 1316.

“We currently have 12 adults choir members and 29 choristers and we would ideally like to increase that to 40 but it costs us just under £9,000 a year per chorister when you consider their training and covering the cost of music, so we are always grateful to anyone who can help us meet these costs in any way.”

Gaye Kirby, the Cathedral’s head of development, said: “Music is at the very heart of the Cathedral’s celebrations at this time of year.

“It seemed very fitting for music to be the focus on our Christmas fundraising appeal, as donations given now will help us ensure that this wonderful tradition of singing in celebration and prayer continues to flourish for years to come.”

The appeal will run until Sunday, January 24.
