A DISABLED man who died days after being assaulted has been honoured posthumously for donating his organs.

Scott Hall, 28, died in September 2014, 11 days after being attacked by two 15-year-old boys.

The teenagers admitting assaulting Mr Hall, of Newton Hall, Durham, but an inquest found there was no evidence the attack caused his death.

Mr Hall’s organs were donated to save the lives of others and he has been posthumously given the Order of St John Award for Organ Donation.

A private awards ceremony was held at the College of St Hild and St Bede in Durham on Wednesday, November 18.

Mr Hall’s sister Zoe and mother Carol accepted the award from Councillor Jan Blakey, chairman of Durham County Council, on his behalf.

Five other people also received awards, including Nicola Robinson, of Darlington, on behalf of her partner Steven “Bertie” Shaw and Loraine Dixon, of Durham, on behalf of her husband Mark Dixon.

Ian Mackenzie, chair of the local County Priory Group of the Order of St John, said: “Organ donation can clearly save lives and it is also vitally important to say thank you to the families whose loved ones have already donated their organs to assist others.”

The number of deceased organ donors dropped for the first time in 11 years this year, to 1,282.

The Order of St John award scheme began two years ago. Many other ceremonies will be held across the UK in coming months.
