A CORONER today (November 23) held a review hearing ahead of an inquest into the death of a school teacher killed in a car accident while on holiday in Mexico.

Alix Bussey, 23, was approaching the end of a ten night break with her boyfriend, Jonathan Boyle, when she was struck by a car in the resort of Cancun, in April.

It is believed Miss Bussey, from Durham City, and Mr Boyle, 23, were heading back to their hotel on Boulevard Kukulkan following a night out when the accident happened.

At Crook Civic Centre today (Monday, November 23), coroner’s officer Jacqueline Sirrell, said she was still waiting for information from the Mexican authorities about the death of the Bowburn Infants School teacher and the family wanted to wait for the information before continuing.

Coroner Andrew Tweddle said: “I appreciate the family are keen to get the best possible information from the Mexican authorities.

“However, the chief coroner has issued guidance that coroners should not wait indefinitely for information coming from abroad and encourages coroners to proceed with the case within a reasonable time frame.

“With that in mind I will leave matters until January but if nothing forthcoming is received by that time I think this is a case when I will have to list it for a hearing on the basis of the evidence that I have available to me at that time.”

The next hearing will be on January 25.
