AN ARBORETUM is being transformed into a magical winter wonderland for Christmas.

The 100-acre arboretum at Thorp Perrow, near Bedale, North Yorkshire is preparing to welcome Father Christmas to its magical woodland grotto.

Children will be encouraged to follow a festive trail through the trees to a traditional wooden cabin where they can walk through a winter wonderland filled with snowy Christmas scenes, arctic animals and magical creatures, ready to meet Santa.

There will be a chance to then see some more exotic birds and mammals at the bird of prey and wildlife centre surrounding the grotto, including a hand-reared baby meerkat.

Mulled wine and mince pies will be available in the tearoom.

Lady Diana Ropner, creator of the grotto, said: “We are delighted that Santa has chosen our beautiful grotto as his home again this winter and we’re looking forward to seeing the happy smiles of the children who will visit him.”

The grotto will open on Friday, December 4 on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.30am until 3pm and will be open for pre-school and school groups on Thursdays and Fridays from 11am until 2pm.

From December 19 until Christmas Eve it will be open every day.

Entry is £4.50 per child.
