A COMMUNITY association that is closing is to sell its possessions for charity.

Durham Gilesgate Youth and Community Association (DGYCA) is closing in December, after more than 30 years.

Many items owned by the association will be sold in aid of Kay’s Hill Animal Sanctuary, near Bishop Auckland.

A table top sale will be held at the association, on Bradford Crescent, Gilesgate, on Saturday, November 28, from 10am to 2pm.

There will be toys, bric a brac, books, bedding, furniture and gifts, many for £1 or less.

Tables are available to book, priced £5. To book, call 0191-386-1933 or email: dgyandca@googlemail.com

Refreshments will be available. Entry is free.

The future of the association had been in doubt since the closure of Durham Free School, which shared its site, earlier this year.

In March, Durham County Council, which owns the site, confirmed it wished to "dispose of it".

DGYCA asked the council to spare the sports hall and gym, along with the neighbouring playing fields.

However, a consultants’ report has suggested that would cost more than £2m, whereas demolishing all buildings would cost £850,000.

A farewell evening will be held on Thursday, December 17.
