A FIREWORKS display will light up the skies of Newton Aycliffe next month.

Great Aycliffe Town Council will stage its annual fireworks show from 7pm on Thursday, November 5 on the running track field next to the Oakleaf Sports Complex in Newton Aycliffe.

For the second year, the event will only be open to residents of the Great Aycliffe parish, with a limited number of wristbands available.

This follows the cancellation of the display in 2013 after a record turnout the previous year saw 15,000 people flock to the town to enjoy the spectacle, leading to health and safety fears.

The new system worked well last year and residents are now invited to collect free wristbands, which will be given out on a first come first served basis at a series of public events.

These take place at the Oak Leaf Sports Complex tomorrow (Tuesday, October 20) from 5pm to 8.30pm; Wednesday, October 21 from 10am to 1pm; Thursday, October 22 from 2pm to 6pm; Saturday, October 24 from 9am to noon; and Monday, October 26 from 1pm until 3.30pm.

Residents must bring proof of address with either a photo card driving license or utility bill.
