CHILDREN dressed as forebears from throughout their school’s long history to celebrate its landmark 100th anniversary.
Thornhill Primary School, in Shildon, marked its centenary today (Friday, October 9) with a series of events for children and the wider community.
Each class took on a different time in their school’s 100 year history and wore period costumes – from pinafores to flares, flower power shirts and luminous leg warmers.
Families enjoyed a performance of songs from the ages and there was a display of old photographs and memorabilia, much of which was lent to the school by former pupils.
An open afternoon began with dancing round a maypole and traditional entertainment in the playground including a fairground and Punch and Judy show.
Head teacher Sally Green said: “It’s extremely important to celebrate the school being 100 years old and our school’s got a real family atmosphere and has been the school for lots of families over generations.
“I think it’s really important that everyone feels involved.
“It’s been amazing and such a fabulous day, everyone’s in a really good mood, it’s just wonderful.
“I cannot thank everyone enough from the parents for the wonderful costumes through to the staff.”
