YOUNGSTERS have started their sex education with a twist at one County Durham primary school.

That’s after pupils at Ingleton C of E Primary School, in Ingleton, Teesdale, were given a flour ‘baby’ to look after as part of their science lessons.

About 20 Year 5 and 6 children are taking part in the project which has now been running successfully for two weeks and is based around children’s author, Anne Fine’s book, Flour Babies.

Headteacher, Judith Pressley, explained how the children were all enthusiastic about caring for their bags of flour and have even taken to changing their nappies, feeding them and making sure they are safe in the school’s ‘crèche’ while they are in lessons.

“It’s about being responsible parents with this bag of flour dressed up as a baby and they have to look after them 24/7 and make sure they are well cared for, they even have a crèche in school,” Mrs Pressley said.

“They take it very seriously and they want to keep them but we are going to write to Anne Fine because it would be lovely for her to see them.”
