SIZE, age and injury proved no barrier for Thai boxer Shannon Bowe as she fought her way to national glory.

The 15-year-old, from Darlington, not only clinched the British Thai boxing title she did so by beating an opponent who was both heavier and older than her

Shannon, who studies at St Aidan’s Academy, fights in the 50kg to 55kg category.

But when she turned up at the recent British Championships in Manchester, she fought in the class above to take the title on points over the three two minute rounds.

She said: "When I was younger I was very quiet and shy.

"I took up Thai boxing with my cousin and it has really boosted my confidence.”

Shannon trains every night and Saturday morning.

She also takes part in demonstrations with Darlington Boxing and Martial Arts Club, based at The Northern Echo Arena.

She added: “I was really pleased to win, especially as I was carrying a bit of an injury – a sprained ankle.

"I wasn’t sure whether I had won and looked over to my Mam and Dad who gave me the thumbs up.

“My friends say I am a bit boring because I don’t go out much and want to train all the time, but I really love it and it keeps me really fit.

"I would love to join the army or work in sport. It is my dream to fight for Team GB."

St Aidan's principal Nicole Gibbon said: “Shannon has done incredibly well and is completely dedicated to her sport.

"Having a British champion in the school provides an exemplary role model for all of our students as it shows what can be achieved at a very high level with hard work and determination.”
