A PRIMARY teacher is shaving her hair off for charity tomorrow (Friday) after being inspired by one of the pupils at her school.

Dewi Tidball, a teacher at Hartlepool's West View Primary School, had been growing her hair especially for her wedding last month and planned to have a modest trim once her big day was over.

But her plans changed when she heard of the plight of West View year 6 pupil Elly-Mae Waugh, ten, who was diagnosed with leukaemia over the summer.

This inspired Dewi to decide to shave all her hair off in aid of CLIC Sargent, a charity which supports families who have children with cancer.

Andy Brown, headteacher of West View Primary School, said: “Clearly, everyone at the school was saddened to hear about Elly-Mae and we hope that she makes a speedy and full recovery.

“Dewi is among the many people in the school who have been touched by Elly Mae’s situation and it is very brave and unselfish of her to have her head completely shaved for such a worthy cause.”

The 25 year-old, who has been a teacher at West View for over three years, has set up her very own Just Giving page where staff, children and parents have been encouraged to donate. As an extra incentive, children who do so will be randomly selected to snip off a piece of Dewi’s hair.

Mr Brown added: “Dewi has also pledged to donate her hair to Little Princess Trust - a charity that provides real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have lost their own hair following cancer treatment.

“She has set herself a goal of raising £1500 and is already more than a third of the way there.”
