AN inquest has been opened into the death of a much-loved teenage boy who died in the River Wear in July.

Cameron Gosling, 14, had been socialising with friends at the river near Bishop Auckland prior to his death on Sunday, July 5.

His funeral at St Catherine’s Church in Crook was one of the biggest his hometown had ever seen, with hundreds of people including 200 bikers from his father Sean’s motorcycle club turning out to pay their respects.

Today, County Durham coroner Andrew Tweddle opened and adjourned an inquest into the popular teenager’s death.

Coroner’s officer Susan Rooney said a post-mortem had been carried out and confirmed the cause of death to be fresh water immersion.

After hearing the investigation was progressing well, Mr Tweddle said: “I open this inquest and adjourn for further review on October 19. This should give sufficient time for those inquiries to be completed and for me to have an opportunity to consider the file.”
