AROUND 300 runners are expected to take part in a cross country race taking place this weekend.

The second annual Coxhoe Trail Run, sponsored by Hope Construction Materials, takes place on Sunday (September 6).

The 10k cross country event follows the success of last year’s inaugural run, organised by Active Life Coxhoe and supported by Sedgefield Harriers and Start Fitness.

Almost 200 people took part in last year’s run, which followed the old railway lines and quarry paths between Coxhoe and Kelloe.

The race, won by Iain Twaddle in a time of just under 35 minutes, attracted competitors aged from 17 to 74.

Event organiser (CORR) Bal Verdi said: “The first Coxhoe Trail Run was seen as a big success story by runners, organisers, sponsors and observers alike, and we look forward to an even bigger event this year.

“The Active Life Centre in Coxhoe aims to get more people enjoying a range of leisure activities. This is now a key annual fixture on our calendar – it helps promote the Centre and also enables participants to enjoy the historic countryside around here."

Regional director Robert Hamilton, of Hope Construction Materials, which operates Coxhoe Quarry, said: “The first Coxhoe Trail Run brought a real buzz of activity to the village last year and it’s a pleasure to be able to be involved again.”
