PLANS to turn the former Guisborough Register Office into a pub will be debated next week.

Giant pub chain Wetherspoons want to turn the building into the pub at a cost of £1.4m which could lead to the creation of 50 new jobs.

The pub chain would also extend the building and create a beer garden and have submitted a planning application to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

However some residents have objected to the plan arguing it would ad to parking, safety and environmental concerns as well as cause anti-social behaviour. At one point there was a campaign for a theatre group for people with learning disabilities called Earthbeat to use the building but the group have since found a new home in their base town of Saltburn.

However Wetherspoons says the scheme would improve the quality of the building, which has been empty since 2013, and add "interest and variety" to the Guisborough town centre, which has been designated as a conservation area by the council.

A council planning officer has graded the plans as 'satisfactory' and councillors will decide whether to give the pub chain permission on Thursday, September 3 at the Community Heart building in Redcar at 10am.
