STORYTELLING and a pirate event will be held in a North-East coastal town this weekend.

Award-winning storyteller Carmen Thompson will be entertaining children from 11am to 3pm at the Beacon in Redcar tomorrow (Saturday, August 23), while on Sunday at the same time artist, puppet maker and costume designer Kim McDermottroe will show kids how to transform themselves into pirates, as well as helping them make kites to fly on the beach.

Ms Thompson, from Redcar, is a writer and performer who has performed everywhere from Saltburn Square to London’s Royal Festival Hall.

She said: “The stories I tell are inspired by the stories my fisherman father told to me, stories that have been told at the firesides of Redcar’s fishermen and women for hundreds of years. The stories I perform are written to bring to life the myth and magic of our seafaring past for future generations.”

Ms McDermottroe is a puppet artist for the Stockton International Riverside Festival and the Middlesbrough Mela. She has also created a zoo full of creatures include tigers, camels and peacocks.

The workshops are free and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
