STAFF from a research centre have taken running training so seriously they have created a one-kilometre track around their office.

The team from the Materials Processing Institute (MPI) in Middlesbrough are getting in shape for the Tees Pride 10k next month.

The 20-strong team from the Grangetown research centre will be raising funds for Redcar & Cleveland Mind, and have been training hard - even at work, creating the running track around their premises.

Running team leader Andy Richardson said: "We have a very broad spectrum of runners taking part, from the experts who enter runs such as these every year, to complete novices who have thrown themselves in at the deep end to support this worthy charity.

“Aside from raising money, the whole group has benefited massively.

“We’ve been holding training sessions every Tuesday and Thursday, encouraging people to come out of their offices, get some fresh air and improve their fitness at the same time.

“There’s been so much interest in running that we’ve even been working with our on-site bio-diversity group to create a marked running track for our team.”
