THE rugby world cup is in the region as part of a worldwide tour.

The Webb Ellis Trophy, which is touring the globe head of the Rugby World Cup being held in England this Autumn, was taken to Tynemouth Beach for a tag ruby competition yesterday (Saturday, August 1).

Today (Sunday), it was taken to the Great North Children’s Hospital, Northumbria University and the British Transplant Games closing ceremony at Gateshead International Stadium.

Tomorrow (Monday), the public can see the trophy at the Angel of the North from 8am to 9am; Palace Green, Durham from 10am to 1pm; and West Hartlepool RFC from 2pm to 3pm.

Also on Monday, Barnard Castle School will host a celebration dinner with ex-pupils and former England internationals Rob Andrew and Rory Underwood and the trophy will be taken to Mowden Park RFC in Darlington, where there will be a rugby camp and touch rugby competition.

The Rugby World Cup begins at Twickenham on Friday, September 18 when England take on Fiji. Three pool matches will be staged at St James Park, Newcastle.
