A TALENTED Dales photographer and film-maker, who says he wants to help people appreciate the peace and tranquillity of the region, is to display his work at one of the area’s top exhibition centres.

Gary Lintern, 46, born in Billy Row near Crook but now living in Wolsingham, is holding an exhibition at the Durham Dales Centre in Stanhope from 11am to 3pm on August 29 to 31, during which some of his work will be for sale.

The multi-media three-dimensional experience will include a range of work including screen projection in the centre’s function room, stars projected onto the ceiling, sound effects and music.

Mr Lintern was living and working as a learning support coach in Newcastle when he discovered he enjoyed taking pictures of the city and Quayside at night.

When he moved back to the Dales, he was struck by the beauty of the area and decided to try out his night photography in Weardale. He set up the ‘Weardale at Night’ Facebook page, attracting 2,700 followers, then went on to create a Durham at Night page which already has 4,500.

Self-taught in night-photography, he said: “There was a lot of trial and error at first. Even now, because of the darkness, I sometimes don't know how good the work is until I see it on my computer screen.

“At first it was a bit odd being out in the dark of night, but I soon got comfortable with it. I have a good knowledge of this area from school trips and field visits, but I had to learn how to get around without a torch.

“It takes about half to three-quarters of an hour to get your night vision, but only seconds to ruin it with a torch.

“When I started I didn't know anyone else who was doing night photography, and my aim now is to start courses in Stanhope and Durham.

“I will do one-day courses in the Durham Dales Centre, such as basic camera use and settings, and I plan to do outdoor night photography courses in the autumn in Weardale and Durham, including one-to-one tuition.”

“My aim is to help people appreciate the peace, quiet and tranquillity of the place they live in.”
