ALMOST 200 children and young people have attended sports camps over the last fortnight.

Durham Gilesgate Youth and Community Association has been holding its annual summer sports camps at its base off Bradford Crescent, Gilesgate, Durham City.

One course ran each day from July 20 to 24 and another ran this week. Over the fortnight, almost 200 young people aged five to 14 attended.

They enjoyed archery, football, trampolining, tennis, gymnastics, a mass water fight and jumping around on huge inflatables.

Centre manager Ann Ferguson said: “It’s been brilliant. The parents are already asking if we’re going to be back at Easter. It’s been absolutely fabulous.”

This is the 16th year the summer camp has been held.

Mrs Ferguson said: “I’ve had people working here who came on the camp as children.”

The community association is facing an uncertain future after Durham Free School, which shared the site, closed at Easter.

The land belongs to Durham County Council, which has said it wants to dispose of it. Talks are ongoing.
