A STUNNING aerial performance got this year's Stockton International Riverside Festival (Sirf) off to a flying start this evening (Thursday, July 30).

BoO was an aerial show that had breath-taking trapeze performances on an extraordinary majestic structure made of more than 350 bamboo poles.

The four-day festival of spectacular and entertaining street performances boasts acts from around Europe.

The Northern Echo:

Visitors will be about to enjoy fire gardens, circus troupes, live art and comedy more than 100 shows take over the town centre.

The festival, which runs until Sunday, will celebrate the redevelopment of the area with four days packed full of spectacular street theatre, dance and music productions from all around the world.

A focus for Sirf 15 is Instant Light, the interpretation of a story commissioned from Sara Maitland telling the magical tale of how Stockton became a festival town.

The Northern Echo:

It starts with the historic fact of John Walker’s invention of the friction match and weaves through it the magic of the circus to create a mythical version of how the festival might have come about.

Instant Light will be presented in episodes over the full weekend.
