A SUPERMARKET will launch its new local charity of the year this weekend.

Sainsbury’s in Sedgefield turned to its customers when choosing a community cause to support over the next 12 months.

Hundreds voted in store and online and Stray Aid, a Coxhoe based charity which rescues lost or abandoned dogs, came out on top.

Tomorrow (Friday, July 31) Sainsbury’s staff will kick-start a year of fundraising fun by dressing as animals and packing bags.

On Saturday and Sunday (August 1 and 2), meanwhile, Stray Aid will promote the charity’s work in store from 10am to 2pm.

There will also be a tombola, name the teddy competition, free dog micro chipping and a chance to meet some rescued dogs.

Karen Maughan, events coordinator at Stray Aid, said: “We can’t wait to get started. We’re hoping the partnership will help raise awareness of our cause to the store’s customers and will help us develop the important service we provide to the community.”

Rachel Owens, store manager, added: “We’re really looking forward to launching our partnership with Stray Aid this weekend. We had a fantastic response from our customers this year during the voting period.”
