POLICE are appealing for information after a 21-year-old man was seriously injured in a four-vehicle collision on the A66.

The incident occurred near West Layton at 4.40pm on Monday.

All four vehicles were travelling towards Scotch Corner.

The driver of a blue Vauxhall Corsa, a 21-year-old man from the Ulverston area, was airlifted to James Cook hospital with serious head injuries.

The driver of the black Ford C-Max, a 32-year-old woman from the Richmond area, was checked by ambulance at the roadside, but did not need to go to hospital.

The driver of the white VW Crafter Pick-up, a 42-year-old man from Wakefield, was also not injured and checked at the roadside by ambulance.  

Fire crews from Richmond, Colburn and Barnard Castle attended the scene.

The road was closed for four hours while the scene was examined and the vehicles recovered. It reopened at around 8pm.
