BARNARD Castle police are appealing for information after a post office was burgled on Monday morning (July 27).

Intruders broke into Woodland Post Office at 3.10am after forcing open the front door.

Neighbourhood Inspector, Kevin Tuck, said the thieves set off the alarms and took a quantity of cigarettes and the black electronic till.

He also said a stolen blue Vauxhall Zafira, registration Y685 JLG, was used in the crime and was found abandoned shortly afterwards near the Manor House Hotel, in West Auckland.

The car was taken in another burglary at St Helen's Auckland on Sunday, July19.

Insp Tuck said: “Officers are keen to establish where the vehicle has been in the week leading up to the post office burglary.

“There is a possibility that the till will have been abandoned between Woodland and West Auckland and anybody coming across it is asked to get in touch.”

Anybody with information is asked to contact Acting Detective Sergeant Gareth Hodgson of Bishop Auckland CID on 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
