BOMB disposal experts have removed a spent artillery shell from a County Durham care home this evening.

Police were called to the facility in Oak Terrace, West Cornforth, at 5.40pm after a concerned staff member was shown the 18-inch shell by a resident.

Fearing it could still be live the officers sought advice and sent photographs of the object to Army bomb disposal experts in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire,

The experts advised cordoning off the immediate area but said evacuation was not necessary.

Inspector Malcolm Smart, of Durham Police, said: “The bomb disposal team arrived at the scene at 8pm and examined the shell. They quickly identified it posed no danger to the public. It was removed from the area.”
