THOUSANDS of pounds are up for grabs for projects that celebrate the River Tees.

The River Tees Rediscovered Landscape Partnership aims to reconnect communities, organisations and visitors to the river and is offering grants of £1,000 for groups and projects that aim to do the same.

A total of £20,000 will be given annually to 20 groups to deliver 20 projects on and around the River Tees each year over three years.

The money has been made available thanks to support from the River Tees Rediscovered, the Tees Valley Community Foundation and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It is open to applicants within the Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton on Tees and Darlington areas.

Hugh McGouran, chief executive of the Tees Valley Community Foundation, said: “TVCF are delighted to help support local groups in the celebration of our majestic River Tees and we look forward to receiving applications for exciting projects that help engage our local communities in activities inspired by the River.”

Doug Nicholson, chairman of the River Tees Rediscovered Landscape Partnership, added: "We are delighted with the generous support and enthusiasm from the Foundation.

“It's particularly encouraging that they also see the potential for the scheme to benefit the wider community, and to improve perceptions of the lower Tees Valley nationally.”

Applications can be submitted at any time with cut-offs point being two weeks before each decision panel is held on the last day of each month in September, December, March and June.
