SPECTATORS arrived in their hundreds yesterday (Saturday, July 4) to celebrate the diamond jubilee of a town’s gala.

Spennymoor’s roads were temporarily closed to make way for the all-singing and dancing parade as cheerful onlookers waved flags and enjoyed the sunny weather.

Dozens of community groups and charities marched proudly through the town centre before heading over to the Jubilee Park for a Funfair.

The event marks the 60th anniversary of the town gala, an annual event engrained in the town’s history.

Spennymoor Town Council Leader Ian Geldard said this year’s event was one of the best.

“I thought we had a really good turnout and this year’s additions went down really well, such as characters from Frozen and the flags for the children.” He said.

“I really think this gala was one of the best ones we have had.”

Taking part in the parade was Spennymoor Town Band, Joanne Banks School of Dance, South Durham Gymnastic Club and various jazz bands.

There were also walking floats, vintage vehicles, fire engines, pupils from local schools and nurseries and much more.

Cllr Geldard also took part in the parade, marching with the Spennymoor Miners Banner.

He added: “The parade was absolutely fantastic, it was an honour for me to march with the Spennymoor Miners Banner, I have done so for the last two years and the feeling is always a great one.

“Times are hard for everyone at the moment with all of the government cuts and events like this are an opportunity to bring the community together and lift everybody’s spirits.

“The gala will without a doubt be back next year with the continued support of the town council."
