DARLINGTON joined the rest of the UK in holding a one minute’s silence to respect those who lost their lives in last week’s devastating terror attack in Tunisia.

A large crowd of people gathered on High Row below Darlington clock tower and shoppers stopped in their tracks to take part in a one-minute silence led by the town's Mayor Thomas Nutt as the clock struck 12.

Thirty eight people lost their lives when gunman Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on a beach in the popular resort of Sousse on Friday June 26.

Thirty of the victims were British tourists, including North-East grandmother Lisa Burbidge from Gateshead.

Prime Minister David Cameron later announced that the whole of Great Britain would participate in a one minute’s silence to remember and respect the tourists killed in the attack.

Darlington's Mayor Thomas Nutt said, “It’s really important to show respect to these people who tragically died.

“I’m glad so many people turned up today.”
