A SUPERFAST 1,000mph car will be zooming its way in to the Croft Circuit this month to help ‘inspire a generation’.

The ‘Bloodhound SuperSonic Car’, sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, will be visiting the region as part of the North-East heat of the Greenpower competition.

The Institution wants to break the current world record of 763mph by attempting to get the BSC up to 1,000mph in South Africa this October.

The aim behind the car’s visit to Croft is to help raise awareness amongst school children about the car and to inspire a generation with science and engineering.

Mike Lambert, spokesman at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “We need to encourage more young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), to ensure we have the right skills to keep the country’s economy growing and to tackle the big challenges facing humankind like rising population and climate change.

“At the moment the number of people pursuing STEM careers is just not enough to meet future demands, which is why inspiring young people through Bloodhound SSC and Greenpower is so important.”

The car will be at Croft Circuit from 9am on Tuesday July 7.
