MORE than 80 airmen killed in Teesdale will be commemorated with an annual service tomorrow (Wednesday, July 1).

The public are being invited to attend the Aviation Day service at the memorial’s ‘new home’ in the Garden of Remembrance, in Galgate, Barnard Castle.

The aviation service has been held in the grounds of Deerbolt Young Offenders Institute, on the outskirts of the town, since 1996 but was forced to move this year because the land was sold for housing.

The Vintage Pipers will be in attendance from about 10.45am and a ribbon cutting ceremony will be performed by the Town Mayor, Councillor Sandra Moorhouse.

The service itself will be taken by HMYOI chaplain John Little while there will also be a wreath laying ceremony followed by the Last Post and a one minute silence.

The service is expected to finish at about 11.20am following the piper’s lament.

Members of the Royal Air Forces Association, Barnard Castle School and Barnard Castle Town Council will also be present.
