A TEAM of cyclists retraced St Cuthbert’s final journey to raise money for charity.

A 12-strong group from Emmanuel Church Cycling Club in Durham City pedalled the 120 miles from Holy Island to Durham Cathedral, re-enacting the journey of monks carrying St Cuthbert’s coffin.

They also visited Coldingham Priory, where St Cuthbert is said to have ministered; finishing the three-day challenge on Thursday evening (May 28). The event was in aid of County Durham Foodbank.

Organiser Glenn Jones said: “Although this annual Foodbank ride is primarily a fundraiser and awareness event it has also become a pilgrimage ride taking in areas that Cuthbert was active in.

“We’ve had fantastic weather and had the privilege of finishing the ride at the cathedral, parking our bikes outside and then visiting the Shrine of St Cuthbert, where Canon Rosalind Brown of the cathedral welcomed us and said prayers of thanksgiving for our journey.”

Canon Brown said: “We are delighted to welcome the riders at the end of their long journey to raise money for the Foodbank which is, sadly, so needed in Durham. We congratulate the riders on their achievement.”
