POPULAR fish and chip restaurant Trencher’s in Whitby was hit by fire on Saturday.

The restaurant, in New Quay Road in the town, was left with fire and smoke damage after the blaze at around 10am.

Fire crews from Whitby and Lythe teamed up after reports of smoke were reported to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, and upon arrived they requested more help from the aerial ladder platform from Scarborough, and engines from Danby and Robin Hood’s Bay.

The fire started in a frying range and spread to an extractor system. Staff in the shop used an extinguisher to put out the fire in the range and fire crews dealt with the fire in the extractor system using three hose reel jets, six breathing apparatus and ladders.

The building, which was hit by a serious blaze in 1999, this time sustained fire damage to the ground floor, and smoke damage throughout all three floors of the property, but it is believed no one has been hurt.
