WAR time memories were rekindled as a care home turned back the years with a VE-Day party.

Staff and residents at Redworth House Care Home, on Byerley Road, Shildon, took part in a 1940’s style party today. (Thursday, May 21)

The dining room was decked out in Union flags and the staff dressed up as land girls to fit in with the theme.

Residents aged between 60 and 90-years enjoyed a party dinner and a sing along with the staff at the home.

The event is one of several activities taking part at the care home to help to mark national Dementia Week. (Monday, May 18, to Friday, May 22)

Jan Traynor, activities co-ordinator at the home, said: “Some of our residents are old enough to have lived through the war.

“Some of them can remember the days gone by but they can’t remember yesterday.

“It’s been a success and the event has helped to bring the memories back for them. We felt that this fitted in well with the national VE Day celebrations too.”

Staff and residents are to don pyjamas to eat pop corn and watch movies to help to end Dementia Week tomorrow. (Friday, May 22)
