A WARNING was issued over the dangers of taking illegal substances after five people were taken to hospital in a rogue drug scare.

Police officers and ambulance personnel were called to the Norfolk Hotel, a guest house in Sunderland city centre, at 1.50pm on Saturday (May 2), after a 43-year-old man was found unconscious.

He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital in a critical and potentially life-threatening condition, having, apparently, taken heroin which was said to be stronger than usual.

Four other people at the Norfolk Street premises were also believed to have taken some of the same drugs.

They were all conscious but feeling unwell and were also taken by ambulance to the hospital, but were released later following treatment.

Chief Inspector Neil Robson, of Northumbria Police, said: “We’re carrying out inquiries to establish exactly what happened and to locate the source of this batch of heroin.

“However, we want to remind and warn people of the dangers of taking illegal drugs, or indeed any drugs that have not been prescribed to them.

“If anyone has taken an illegal substance and becomes unwell they should seek medical advice immediately.

“Anyone with any information about this drug, including its whereabouts and its source, should contact us as soon as possible.”

Following inquiries four people were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in supplying controlled drugs.

Men aged 38, 41 and 42, and a 37-year-old woman, remained in custody today (Sunday May 3), helping police with inquiries.

Anyone wanting to report information about drugs and drugs supply is asked to contact the Northumbria force, on 101, extension 69191, quoting reference 655 020515.

Should anyone require emergency medical attention as a result off taking illegal substances, they should simply call 999.
