A MAN who broke into his own grandfather’s house and stole savings plus a sovereign ring was told to expect a custodial sentence.

John George Middleton pleaded ‘guilty’ to a charge of burglary, when it was put to him again, on the day a trial was due to be staged at Durham Crown Court, having previously denied the offence.

It took place on December 12, at an address in Wells Crescent, Seaham, from where the ring and £593 was taken.

Judge Christopher Prince said: “So, he now admits breaking into his own 74-year-old grandfather’s house, taking money hidden in a pair of shoes and a gold sovereign ring.

“It really beggars belief.”

Judge Prince also questioned why Middleton waited until the day his trial was due to start to change his plea.

“If ever there was a case which could have been resolved, this appears to be it.

“He’s taken the case about as far as is possible before entering a ‘guilty’ plea and therefore his credit for his admission, in terms of reduction of sentence, will be reduced to ten per cent.”

Middleton, 21, of Gray Avenue, Murton, County Durham, was remanded in custody pending preparation of a background probation report, prior to sentence.

Judge Prince told him: “You will be sentenced for burglary of your grandad’s house and I’m quite sure you will receive a custodial sentence for having done so.”

Sentence was adjourned until Friday May 22.
