A NEW exhibition exploring some of the most exciting discoveries from recent archaeological digs in the region has opened to the public.
Beneath Our Feet showcases the work of amateur and professional archaeologists across County Durham, including an Iron Age settlement at Great Chilton, Binchester Roman Fort near Bishop Auckland and an Anglo-Scandinavian cemetery at Seaham.
There is also information on the Prince Bishops of Durham’s fortified hunting lodge at Westgate, upper Weardale, and Durham City’s historic South Bailey.
David Mason, principal archaeologist at Durham County Council, said: “This exciting exhibition will allow local people their first chance to see many of the treasures revealed by recent archaeological work in the region.
“From Roman treasures to the rubbish from Durham City back yards, the exhibition throws fresh light on the lives and times of our ancestors in County Durham.”
Beneath Our Feet is at Durham University’s Palace Green Library, on Palace Green, Durham, until Friday, July 24. Entry is free.
The library is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday and from noon to 5pm on Mondays and Bank Holidays.
